World Book Day - April 23

April 20, 2021

Every year on April 23, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sponsors World Book Day - a day where we celebrate books and the love of reading. This day, first celebrated in 1995, falls on the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birthday, and is celebrated by over 100 countries worldwide. World Book Day is all about celebrating the many wonderful things reading has to offer, as well as the education and entertainment we get from books. While the day was established as a way to encourage kids to read, everyone can join in and find ways to celebrate the day. We’ve put together a few of our favorite ways below!

Dust Off Your Bookshelf and Rediscover an Old Book

It can be difficult to find time to read, and it’s safe to say that many of us have books lying around that we promised we’d get to eventually. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited your own bookshelf, see what books you never got around to finishing. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good book you’ve had sitting around waiting to be read.

If You Have Kids, Encourage Them to Read

If you have kids, consider making today an educational experience all about reading. You could take your kids to the library or a local bookstore and let them pick a book that interests them. Spend some time reading with them or reward them for any time they do spend reading to encourage this healthy habit.

Support Your Local Bookstore

Visiting your local bookstore is a great way to discover new books and connect with your community. Purchases made at local bookstores also benefit independent authors who may not have their books in larger retail locations. Many local bookstores also have a calendar of events filled with fun ways to engage with books, such as author signings, book clubs, and more!

If you’re ready to celebrate World Book Day and are currently searching for some good books to read, now’s the time to sign up for BookCase.Club’s monthly subscription box. Each month, you’ll receive two books from your genre of choice, sent right to your house. This is a great way to kickstart a love of reading for you or someone you know.
