National Read Across America Day 2022

March 01, 2022

Family reading together celebrating National Read Across America Day

Every year on March 2nd, we celebrate National Read Across America Day. It’s a day to focus on our favorite activity and encourage the next generation to make it a daily hobby. The National Education Association (NEW) started the event in 1998 and celebrates it yearly.

Dr. Seuss’s birthday falls on March 2nd, which is why we celebrate on the same day each year. As one of the most loved and influential children’s authors, it’s only fitting that we all come together to read and celebrate his birthday.

While the day was initially started to encourage children to love reading, reading is an essential habit for people of all ages.

How to Celebrate

There are endless ways to celebrate Read Across America Day, but we’ll list out a few of our personal favorites.

  • Read with your child.

Whether you read to your child or have them read to you, taking time out of your day to read with your son or daughter will help them see its value. In addition, they will associate reading with positive memories and happy feelings, making them more likely to continue reading later on in life.

  • Read before bed.

Reading before bed helps your brain unwind and settle down, offering a better night’s sleep. Putting your phone down and avoiding other blue light for two hours before bed has been proven to help you sleep better. So, naturally, replacing your phone with your favorite book is the best way to soothe you to sleep.

  • Go to a book or story reading.

If you want to get out of the house, attending a reading by a local or famous author is a great way to celebrate the day! Bookstores and libraries across the nation host readers on National Read Across America Day to better support the topic. Some events even look for volunteers to read to children - think about offering your love of reading and services in that way.

While there are dozens of ways to celebrate reading, we recommend doing what makes you feel the best. Whether that’s picking up your favorite book, reading with your family, going to your local library, or something else entirely, as long as you are reading, you are celebrating! Tag us on social media to share what you decide to do today. Use #BCCUnboxing if you’re reading one of your BookCase books or #ShareYourBookCase if you’re reading something else from your library. We’d love to see what book you choose to celebrate this national holiday.
