Joanna Cole: December’s Featured Author
Joanna Cole is a very distinguished children’s author. Cole was born in Newmark, New Jersey and currently resides in Connecticut. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at The City College of New York in 1967. The first children’s book she wrote was titled Cockroaches and was written 4 years after she graduated, in 1971. She is known for writing both nonfiction and fiction books that are written in a way to educate and entertain children. Her books are not only educational, but they also highlight major changes or issues that children undergo while growing up. Some of these topics include becoming a big brother or sister, learning how to use the potty, losing teeth, getting adopted, and more. She has also written books that are simply happy and fun stories that children love.
One of her most famous book series was so intriguing that it was made into a television series. Some of you may know this TV and children’s book series from your own childhood - “The Magic School Bus.” Cole said that the famous character in these books, Ms. Frizzle, was actually inspired by one of her teachers when she was a child. She stated that her teacher was very passionate about the subject she taught, had a very creative teaching style, and was interactive with the students in the classroom. Needless to say, this teacher left a lasting impact on Cole’s life and career.
The Magic School Bus and the Science Fair Expedition, The Magic School Bus Inside a Beehive, The Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane, The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body, and The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor all won a Garden State Children’s Book Award. Many other works by Joanna Cole have been recognized for their outstanding stories, originality, and educational capabilities.
