Daylight Savings Time to Read Outside
March 14th is Daylight Savings time which means we “spring forward” and set our clocks forward an hour. Although we lose an hour of sleep, we also gain an extra hour of daylight giving us more time to spend outside. One great way to use this extra time is by getting outdoors with a good book. Reading outside comes with a variety of benefits that we’ve laid out for you below.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Stepping outside into nature does wonders for your mental health and general well-being. Many studies have shown that the outdoors can help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, try taking quick outdoor reading breaks to ease your mind.
Get Your Vitamin D
A recent study found that approximately 50% of people in the US are deficient in Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for regulating the body’s calcium levels and promoting strong bones. Not receiving enough Vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures. If you find it difficult to get outside each day, make it a habit to do some reading outdoors. Building this routine will ensure that you’re getting enough Vitamin D while doing something enjoyable.
Take Time to Relax
Reading has been proven to be an effective stress reliever that has long-term benefits for your mental and physical health. Combined with the fresh air, reading outdoors is a perfect way to relax and step away from the stressful demands of everyday life. You’ll have a chance to take time for yourself and get lost in a new book.
Get Out of the House
The COVID-19 pandemic has left many of us stuck inside our homes. Reading is a great excuse to get out of the house for a while so that you don’t go too stir crazy. Now that Daylight Savings time gives us an extra hour of light, you'll have more time to go outside with a good book. Try heading to your local park and finding a comfy spot to enjoy a new novel in the fresh air.
