Celebrating International Literacy Day – September 8th
September 8th is International Literacy Day, a day reminding people worldwide of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies. UNESCO created this worldwide celebration in 1966 to intensify the efforts towards more literate communities around the globe. The issue of literacy can be seen in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and is targeted to kids and adults alike, ensuring they are given the opportunity to enhance their literacy skills. BookCase.Club wants to help you celebrate International Literacy Day by sharing a few ways you can participate!
Enjoy a Good Book
Celebrating International Literacy Day can be as simple as reading your favorite book! Reading is a gift that some of us take for granted but we must remember how lucky we are to be able to read, oftentimes whenever and wherever we want. Take a little extra time today to show your appreciation for it, whether that’s by taking a few extra minutes picking out the right novel to read or just getting lost in your favorite book.
Share a Book With a Friend or Family Member
Do you have a favorite book that you could read over and over again? Don’t keep it hidden! Share that book with a friend or family member, whether they are looking for recommendations or not; sometimes the right book at the right time can trigger something amazing. Sharing or recommending a book is a great way to get others to read and help them appreciate the beautiful gift of reading.
Read a Book with Your Kids
Reading with your kids is a great way to celebrate International Literacy Day; you can also reverse the roles and have your children practice their reading skills by reading aloud to you. Encouraging your kids to read and develop healthy reading habits is extremely important to your child’s learning and future success. If you are unsure of the right books for your child, BookCase Kids offers books from newborns to pre-teens - all you have to do is pick their age and gender; our expert curators will do the rest.
Support your Local Bookstore or Library
Buying a book or two from your local bookstore or visiting the library is a great way to honor the day. It allows you to get out of the house, talk to other book lovers, and even find new recommendations. Sharing the love of reading with others is the perfect way to celebrate International Literacy Day.
