Brandy Colbert: May’s Featured Author
Brandy Colbert is an award-winning author that is well known within the young adult and nonfiction literary genres. This May, the teenage bookworms who subscribe to our “Teenage Dreams” category will be receiving one of our favorite Brandy Colbert novels. Brandy Colbert grew up in Springfield, Missouri. She graduated from Missouri State University and received her bachelor's degree in journalism - she’s always had a passion for writing. Another one of her other passions is diversity, and readers find themes of the beauty of diversity consistently throughout Colbert’s works. The author stated, “I grew up surrounded by books, and I’m committed to writing stories that reflect the beautiful diversity of our world in all its forms. It’s a privilege to write for young people, and I love helping them take pride in developing and sharing their own stories.”
One of Colbert's most distinguished works is Little & Lion. This novel received ALA’s 2018 Stonewall Book Award, which is a very prestigious honor for authors across all genres. Little & Lion was given numerous other awards, honors, and titles. According to Brandy Colbert’s website, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, Vulture, Bank Street, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Paste Magazine, and Seventeen Magazine all named Little & Lion a “Best Book of 2017”.
Some of Colbert’s other famous and distinguished works are The Revolution of Birdie Randolph, Finding Yvonne, and Pointe. Her most recent release was The Only Black Girls in Town, which was released in March. Her work for 2020 doesn’t end there; she will be releasing a brand new novel in July called The Voting Booth.
